I must make the following confessions and explanations: I never intended
my campaign to be shared beyond the group I originally played it with. But over the years, I have felt a calling to
share it with everyone. This format allows me to do so. You see, part of what makes Dungeon Mastering so fun,
and what makes a home game so unique, is that you can incorporate anything you want to. You can bring to life your favorite
fantasy heroes, you can defend the keep at Helm's Deep, or you can play in the world of your favorite computer game.
Borrowing some else's campaign world to host your private daydream is what D&D is all about. Indeed, there are
literally thousands of published modules and campaign settings designed specifically with that purpose in mind. Unfortunately,
because I make ample use of outside resources when I feel that they do a better job than I am capable of (or if I am to be
even a little bit honest, have time for), I can never publish my world through a traditional medium. True, I could change
names, delete and substitute content, but I would be murdering the spirit of the original. So, I have kept all of the
additional outside materials where possible, with proper referencing where possible, both to give credit where it is due,
and also to help my hopeful audience find the content to fill in the gaps such outside sources were used to fill. Some
stuff I reimagined, other stuff I reworked, and other stuff I simply copied in full. The world itself, however, remains
mine. It remains mine not despite of, but because of these outside influences and homages. In my imagination,
all of the things I have ever read or imagined blend into a single world, and that world is what I have tried to present here. That
said, here are some specific cases where I absolutely feel I must give credit: - Ted's
Caving Adventure. I am sure that many of you are familiar with Ted's Caving Page, which I read alone one dark night many years ago. It chilled me to the bone, and years later I was inspired to adapt
it for a Dungeons and Dragons adventure. I do not really think my end product was particularly well done, but it remained,
at least in my mind,a clever idea. And hey, every group that I've ever run it for enjoyed it, so it can't have
been that bad, can it?
- Blizzard's Diablo Universe. I cannot express my appreciation for this world that gave me so many hours of joy growing up. As I've said
before, every tavern owner in any of my campaign worlds are always named "Ogden", and I have had more clerics named
"Pepin" than any other. I even named my World of Warcraft cleric Pepin, and logged almost 350 days with him.
The Diablo Universe has become dearer to me than almost any other, and I cannot possibly thank Blizzard enough for creating
it.
- My father and sister for their pictures taken at Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico during the summers of 2005 and 2009. Their pictures of the region are some of the best I have ever seen
that capture a land very similar to the Darrowshire region, and I thank them for letting me use them to share my vision.
- I would like to thank the people at Wizards of the Coast both for their continued dedication to the Dungeons and Dragons game, and for providing such quality access to archives of
older material, all for free. I have made use of this material many times, and I feel that they do a great service to
all home game Dungeon Masters.
- I was inspired by the work of F. Paul Wilson, especially by his novel, The Tomb
(You can view the Wikipedia entry here). I have ported his monster, the Rakoshi, into AD&D stats, and posted them on this site. I have future plans
for incorporating both the Rakoshi and the death cult of Kali into the Darrowshire Universe. As with anything I incorporate,
my vision does not necessarily perfectly match that of the original source author, but that's what D&D is all about.
So please, don't berate me if I "incorrectly" utilize the mythos.
- www.Creepypasta.com continues to be a great inspiration to me. To date, I have used three of their stories in the Darrowshire Universe:
"My Fear of Water", "Sleep Paralysis", "Nightmares, a Theory", and "The Bad Dream".
- Anyone else who has ever contributed a thought, idea, or an ounce of support and encouragement for what I do.
This is for all of you.
